CHINA 2011Huang Shan – Part II

BLOG: china Workshop / Huang Shan – Images by Art Wolfe

The weather has been beautiful in Huang Shan, but not conducive to good photography. Without good light, there is a whole lot of nothing going on. In spite of this and the huge volume of tourists that now come here, these mountains remain spectacular. We are heading off to the rice paddies south of Kunming & hoping for better shooting conditions.

Why Do You Photograph?

Iridescent Plant Oils, Mount Rainier N.P. by Jay Goodrich

One of our associate workshop instructors Jay Goodrich is a regular contributor to Outdoor Photographer Magazine. He had a recent blog post entitled, “Why Do You Photograph?” Read why Jay photographs and then, we would like you to share why you do it?

On Location – Northern California

I rarely do assignments, but recently I traveled to California to do a shoot for the award-winning winery Sequoia Grove .  It is a wonderful winery in Napa which has a partnership with the Sequoia Parks Foundation to protect habitat for the magnificent trees.

Following the commercial shoot in Napa, Jay Goodrich & I headed to the ghost town of Bodie, a State Historic Park north of Yosemite National Park. An old gold-mining town that was abandoned by its last residents over 50 years ago, it offers terrific photographic opportunities of “arrested decay.”

The open road of the Eastern Sierra beckoned after a quick stop in  Yosemite, and we caught Owens Lake at sunset.  Most of the water from the Owens River has long since been diverted to the Los Angeles Aqueduct, but some flow has now been restored to the lake.  At dusk when the shallow, alkaline waters are still, the reflections of landforms and the endless high plains sky are superlative.

Back in the Bay Area we rented a small plane and flew over the San Francisco Bay.  Over 90% of the Bay’s marshlands have been lost, but now some areas are slowly being restored for wildlife habitat.  From the sky, the marshes offer amazing array of abstract geometric patterns and colors.

Meeting Minutes – Workshop Locations by Jay Goodrich

Mountain goat and Grinnell Point by Art Wolfe

Last Thursday, Art, Gavriel Jecan, Libby Pfeiffer, and myself had a meeting regarding the upcoming workshops for 2011. We started by looking at our calendars to see who was doing what and when, then we looked at the spreadsheet of locations that all of you voted for, and then we talked–for almost an hour. Everyone out there has selected some amazing world-wide destinations. Topping the list in order are Iceland, Canada, Alaska, and Patagonia. What we came to realize is that we want more opinions on where to travel to in the United States. Now if you just have to go to some international destination, it is still okay to tell us about that too. So don’t be shy, add a comment here or head over to Twitter and tell us by adding the hashtag #travelwithart to your tweet. We will be keeping score for the next week. Then, there will be another meeting.

Yellowstone Burn Area, Yellowstone Lake by Art Wolfe

On Monday Art, Gavriel Jecan, Jay Goodrich, and Rich Reid arrived in Jackson, Wyoming to start scouting locations for our Grand Teton Workshop. They made a quick trip to Yellowstone to visit a burn area from a wildfire that Art filmed last year. The location was stunning. Here is an abstract that Art shot from that visit. Don’t forget our next instructional event will be in San Jose, CA on September 25, 2010. Art will be speaking about the Art of Composition. There are still spaces left and with a $195 entrance fee why wouldn’t you attend?
