Highlights From my newsletter

Seattle skyline, including Mount Rainier, Washington

I am back in Antarctica–well, nearly, as the weather has been preventing us from flying to the icy continent and we are waiting in Punta Arenas for a break. I thought I would share some of the highlights from the newsletter sent out last week, including our hopeful rendition of the 12th Man flag flying atop the space needle. Our team may not have won the game, but the cities support will not recede!

I hope you have had a chance to check out the streamlined events page (formerly workshops) which covers everything from presentations to safaris. I particularly like the map view of all the events I have scheduled. Take a look and join me on a trip or take a seminar! Did you notice the addition of an Exclusive Svalbard Tour this summer?

For those of you in Florida I have a couple terrific events coming up at the Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Fine Art: an Earth Is My Witness presentation and an Art of Composition seminar. There is a $40 discount for MOAFL members.

My friend and colleague Cristina Mittermeier is looking for photographers, people who are passionate about nature and photography, to participate in the Por el Planeta photo competition. It doesn’t matter what age you are, what matters is your willingness to give your best for conservation. Sponsored by National Geographic, Televisa, and the Secretaria de Turismo of Mexico, Por el Planeta will allocate over $300,000 in prize money for the winners & all profits will be donated to conservation initiatives. Submissions close March 27, 2015.

Near the end of Earth is My Witness are the photo notes for all the images in the book. I had several requests for a separate copy of them for easier reading while viewing the pages of the book. We are now offering a download of the photo notes, and by entering the coupon code 1.2015newsletter, at no extra cost!

On to new discoveries and new destinations in 2015! Best of light to all of you.

Subantarctic Atlantic Adventure

It already seems long ago, but last month I headed off to Ushuaia, the jumping off point for Antarctica and the remote islands of the southern Atlantic.

The Falklands are home to huge colonies of albatross and the rockhopper penguins.

South Georgia is my favorite place to shoot on the planet.

I guess I can’t get enough of Antarctica! I’ll be heading back there in late January-early February and there were a couple last-minute openings- more information HERE.

Don’t miss the opportunity to photograph with a master in one of the most beautiful and abstract regions in the United States.

Art and his assistant Gavriel Jecan will work closely with all of the participants in the field, provide classroom lectures, and a classroom critique. This workshop is limited to 8 participants so this will be an intimate experience that will not only yield many beautiful photographs but also memories to cherish for a lifetime.

Oregon Coast Workshop Participant Gallery

This three day workshop was filled with intensive field sessions. Art’s goal was to work closely with each participant to really transform and refine their skills. An image can have the power to stimulate the imagination and intellect while also telling a story that awakens the senses. He challenged them to explore the nature of creativity and discover ways to bring its power to each image.

Everyone that attended explored photography and the subjects that were presented more thoroughly than they ever had before. They all walked away with a new perspective on photography and a new found inspiration.

“I have taken snapshots for more than 10 years, but I hit a wall. I knew there was something missing in my work but I just could not see it. This was my first workshop; Art Wolfe’s Oregon Coast workshop on Composition and Design. His distinctive view of the world, coupled with a unique talent to teach reinvigorated me. It was well worth the investment to get me to the next level. Thank you.”

-Don Turriaga

“The workshop was the most intense, personal experience of any photo seminars/workshops I’ve attended.  The focus on the artistic aspects of photography really whet my appetite and senses to see more of what surrounds me for photo opportunities.  The review of technical basics like the 10 deadly sins plus the near genius demonstration by Art of the capabilities of Lightoom will allow me to continue to progress as a serious amateur.  Art’s assistants were also very helpful and courteous throughout the 3 days—they complemented Art very nicely.  I would definitely consider attending another session to continue to grow my skills and vision.”

Mount Rainier Workshop

Mount Rainier is my backyard and I have been going there since my youth. There is nothing better that rediscovering it with new people. The wildflowers were in full bloom and the clear night sky revealed the Milky Way in all its cosmic glory.

Missed this year’s workshop? I have planned another for 2015!

Palouse Workshop

It’s August and I am teaching workshops! The Palouse is another terrific place for photographers in Washington State. The wheat fields are iconic for this region, sculpted from silt dunes that were deposited during the last ice age.

My next Palouse workshop will be July 17-19, 2015
