TEDxRainier will be held Saturday, Nov 9, 2013 10AM-6PM at the historic 5th Avenue Theatre located in downtown Seattle. TEDxRainier is an independently produced, one-day TED event, featuring a range of dynamic local speakers addressing important issues that affect our communities and the way we shape our world. The theme for this weekend’s event is ReThink.

Tacoma Rail Cars Abstracts May 2013 – Images by Art Wolfe
Sunday was my last day in town before heading off to Borneo and Australia for the next couple of weeks. I had a great time teaching a workshop to a wonderful group on Saturday here in Seattle, thank you to all who attended. A couple of good friends and I drove around the ship yards in Tacoma and Seattle looking to see what sort of “found art” we might come across… something gritty, with an edge to it is what was on the agenda today. It was a great day of working these rail cars looking for abstract compositions, and I am very pleased where it all came together.
Seattle Sheraton Hotel has just put up 4 large panels in their 6th Ave facing windows. Have a look as you pass by. They look great. It is nice to be reminded of nature when you are downtown.

BLOG: Solstice Parade 2011! – Images by Art Wolfe
The Solstice Parade is a great Northwestern tradition. Every year it takes place in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood, the self-styled “Center of the Universe.” It is a rich and colorful venue and a great place to take photos. Last year I was able to get a few shots that made it into my book coming out this fall “Dogs Make Us Human.” Now I am working on a new book which is a look at children from all over the world. It wouldn’t be complete without a photo or two from the center of the universe!

I am very proud to announce that the Urban Forestry Project, created by the Green Seattle Partnership in conjunction with Regalis, has won Environmental Education Association of Washington’s Community Catalyst Award. I worked on and photographed for this wonderful project with the students of Gatewood Elementary School and Chief Sealth International High School in West Seattle, my alma mater. The catalyst project for the Urban Forestry Project was cleaning up and planting trees in the Pelly Place Natural Area with Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai. It was truly inspirational.
• The Green Seattle Partnership (GSP) is composed of Seattle-based entities including the Cascade Land Conservancy and Seattle Parks and Recreation. Under their leadership, grant funds were acquired from the US Forest Service with the stated purpose of creating a compelling program that would model educational learning objectives of the Seattle School District and integrate with Seattle Parks’ Environmental Learning Centers.
• The Urban Forestry Project (UFP) is a groundbreaking program that educates and empowers high school, middle, and elementary school students to explore urban forestry issues on lands adjacent to their schools and improve the health of their forests in a sustainable way. Students participate in real-world science by evaluating the habitat, forming a study hypothesis, designing their study, and implementing field investigations based on their research. The UFP provides significant and innovative opportunities for schools to meet state standards, especially in the STEM disciplines. The Urban Forestry Project incorporates multi-grade teaching that begins with high school students conducting scientific investigations that analyze the health of their local forests.

Support the Seattle Children’s Hospital tomorrow night (Nov 5th) by attending the performance of the Primal Symphony at Benaroya Hall.
Art has donated two limited edition prints and full sets of Travels to the Edge DVDs for the Seattle Symphony Guild’s silent auction taking place before the performance. Art has also donated the use of over 60 stunning images that will be projected during the Symphony.
The Symphony Guild is dedicated to enriching the quality of children’s lives in the Northwest and primarily raises funds through an annual benefit concert, composed by Mateo Messina, with proceeds benefiting uncompensated care at Seattle Children’s Hospital.
Silent Auction starts at 6:30pm and the performance starts at 8pm.
