I never forget that my staff is talented and creative, and yet sometimes I am caught off guard with the great stuff they work on outside of my office! My multimedia producer Amanda Harryman has directed a wonderful documentary- and I’m not the only one who thinks so. The film has already won three awards, but I am writing here to try and help her with another!
Congratulations to Amanda and her team for creating a very inspiring film. She met the subject of the film because he too used to work for me, although now he is on to bigger and better things- he has just started graduate school studies at Seattle Pacific University. Apparently lunch conversations when I am traveling garner interesting subjects! I had no knowledge of Maikaru’s (pronounced My-ka-rue) past with human trafficking. PALOUSE WORKSHOP with Art Wolfe Pullman, Washington

This three-day course will change the way you look through the lens as well as how you look at your photographs. Art will share the finer points of maximizing early morning and late afternoon light. Field shoots will be at some of the most beautiful locations around the beautiful wheat fields of eastern Washington.
All aspects of outdoor photography will be covered including composition, field techniques, technology, and the unique philosophy of this highly specialized profession. There will be informative lectures, rigorous critiques and portfolio reviews.

2013 was a year of firsts as well as a year of accomplishment. I did a huge amount of traveling, much of it in preparation for my new book Earth Is My Witness coming out Fall 2014. Destinations included Kenya, the South Pacific, the Galapagos, Iceland, southern Africa, my home region of the Pacific Northwest, Brazil, Australia, Borneo, Italy, Chile, Argentina, Japan, Myanmar, and India.
We published two instructional photography books with Amphoto Books: The New Art of Photographing Nature with Martha Hill and Tim Grey and The Art of the Photograph with Rob Sheppard. Find them in the store HERE
I received much-appreciated honorifics, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the North American Nature Photography Association and the Nature’s Best Photography Award in recognition of Outstanding Achievement in Nature Photography.

When one of my staff members Amanda Harryman took a couple of days off in March, she said it was to make a documentary. I assumed that meant she was filming for a project. But low and behold, her team actually made a whole documentary called A Dose for Dominic! Apparently, each year, a bunch of crazy documentarians from around the world willingly lose a lot of sleep to create films in 5 days.
Those of you who watch my online videos have seen her talents in the edit studio, so you won’t be surprised to hear that the film made the finals. Of nearly 100 films submitted, 12 have been selected as finalists. Having already been awarded with “Best Use of Theme”, they are now vying for an Audience Award. You can vote for your three favorite films on the Doc Challenge site—these are a really amazing group of 12 short documentaries, all made in an extended weekend.
Last week I was in the Bay Area doing a Google Talk with Nik. My talk will be posted within the next couple weeks.
Later I was walking in a San Francisco neighborhood and saw two red macaws flying out over the city and I followed them down to this local park. There I met the man who had raised them and allows them to free fly out over the skyline. While in the park several people showed up making soap bubbles with wands and rope to the delight of onlookers- and me. Just something fun about bubbles! Finally, what’s a trip to SF without crossing the Golden Gate Bridge for some photos from the famous Battery Spencer vista point.
