Today is Arbor day, a wonderful occasion to celebrate the significance of trees world-wide. The importance of trees both in terms of their impact on habitats and cultures can’t be stated enough but often goes overlooked. Check out arborday.org for more info on what you can do to participate this weekend!
This is also a good time to mention my newest upcoming book which has been available for pre-order for a few weeks. It’s called “Trees: Between Heaven and Earth“, and it will be available this fall. It’s full of beautiful photos of trees from around the world and details their beauty and contributions to habitats, cultures and much much more.
There are sample pages to check out on my online store, and don’t forget that all pre-orders through the site will be signed by yours truly before being sent your way!
Have a wonderful weekend, get out there and plant something!
Following up the important and successful Remembering Elephants, Margot Raggett is back with Remembering Rhinos! The Kickstarter is now live and I’d love you all to check it out at and consider giving us your support. Along with many of the top wildlife photographers in the world, I am delighted to be donating an image to this important project. The Kickstarter will pay for the print run, and all subsequent sales of the book will go to anti-poaching initiatives via Born Free.
The Remembering Elephants book project not only produced a beautiful coffee table book; it also raised nearly $170,000 for this important cause. Complete your set, or create one instantly with one of the donation levels that includes both books. Remembering Rhinos is scheduled to be available before the holiday season in 2017 and what better gift for the nature, wildlife, or photography enthusiast than a thoughtful gift that benefits the continued fight to preserve wildlife?
Two exciting bits of news today for those of you in New York and across the pond in the U.K.!
Limited spots still remain available for my Photography As Art Seminar in New York City this Sunday. During this day-long seminar you’ll learn from my lifetime of experience and interest in treating photography as an artistic medium how to create compelling and creative shots wherever you happen to be in the world, including your own back yard. Maximizing the artistic and creative opportunities of capturing images has always been a priority in my work, and I look forward to sharing my insights and experiences with you!
I have attended several other Art Wolfe workshops in the past and have always learned something new. The Photography as Art Workshop in Denver was no different! I am by inclination a nature photographer, but Art’s presentation was much more than just nature photography. It was truly inspiring, and will have a significant impact on my photography in the future. Art’s message truly hit home for me. I would recommend the Photograph as Art Workshop to anyone with a serious interest in photography.
Encompassing a variety of subject matter from endangered animals, landscapes, and cultural events, Photographs from the Edge is a collection of images from my travels around the world accompanied with the technical information involved as well as my approach to the creative concept behind each shot.
Today we celebrate one of the more iconic and often symbolic creatures of the animal kingdom; the elephant.
Long revered for their size (African elephants weigh as much as 22,000 pounds) and intelligence, elephants are one of the few species to use tools and employ cohesive teamwork. They are also one of the more expressive and emotional members of the animal kingdom, emoting feelings of empathy and grief for fallen companions.
On this day where we honor these amazing creatures and reaffirm our efforts to conserve and expand their numbers, it couldn’t be a better time to discuss a book project and launch event that I am honored and elated to be a part of. Remembering Elephants is a collaborative effort encompassing the work of 65 of the world’s top wildlife photographers documenting the life of an elephant. 100% of the proceeds from each book sold will benefit conservation efforts.
The Art of the Photograph helps amateur photographers of all levels break bad habits and shatter common yet incorrect assumptions that hold many photographers back, transforming your photography in the process.
And it is now available in the UK, including on Amazon.
It is still available in the US, including on my store.
Feeling spontaneous? I will be giving two presentations at my gallery Tuesday, December 10th. I head out of town for six weeks so this will be the last chance to get personalized books for the holidays!
The Art of the Photograph
Essential Habits for Stronger Compositions
By Art Wolfe and Rob Sheppard
Foreword by Dewitt Jones
Based on legendary image-maker Art Wolfe’s popular lecture series, THE ART OF THE PHOTOGRAPH (Amphoto Books, on sale December 3, 2013, $29.99) is guaranteed to shift the fundamental way amateur photographers see and capture the world around them. Drawing from a career spanning 40 years of award-winning photography, Art Wolfe gives a rich array of insights, advice, and techniques aimed at dramatically offering the most comprehensive, imaginative master class available in a photography book.
This is Art Wolfe’s instructional magnum opus and a highly personal work. He shares the story of his own artistic discovery and describes the rigors of his experience as a professional photographer, shooting in the field. Utilizing his formal training as an art instructor, Wolfe teaches readers how to explore the elements of design to make compelling and emotionally engaging photographs. Together, Art Wolfe and Rob Sheppard look at the most common traps amateurs fall into and offer the kind of simple yet eye-opening advice that can instantly change anyone’s photos. How do you find inspiration? How do you find unique subjects? How do you know which lens to use? Wolfe also includes the invaluable chapter on the “10 Deadly Sins of Composition” so photographers will know beyond a shadow of a doubt how to take the most satisfying images possible.
THE ART OF THE PHOTOGRAPH runs the full gamut of Art Wolfe’s artistic expertise and lays the true foundation of image-making. Extraordinary photos of the world’s cultures, wildlife and varied landscapes round out this essential curriculum to provide the most thorough and imaginative volume on composition.
