This is the last offering of this class this year. It has been applauded by so many photographers and it will motivate you to get out there and try new ways of seeing that can improve your compositions immensely. We all need inspiration and this is a great one.
Saturday, November 12 – Nature Visions Expo Keynote
I am the keynote speaker this year at the 2011 Nature Visions Expo. This is an event that comes to us through the Mid-Atlantic Photography Association. I will be giving my favorite lecture “Between Heaven and Earth”. This talk is a grand adventure tracing my formative years and development as an artist. There will be a Q&A following. Not only did I leave with renewed passion and a clearer vision for finding a composition when I thought there was none, but the individual attention provided by his assistants, Gavriel Jecan and Jay Goodrich, was tailored specifically to my needs as a student. All provided superb guidance on how to communicate the passion and artistry of a shot.

Art Wolfe’s Olympic National Park Workshop was a unique opportunity for me to learn what I needed to do to take my photography to a new level. The Olympic Peninsula Workshop was my first experience of this sort with a professional photographer / artist. I’ve been getting more serious about my photography for the past couple of years. Art Wolfe (as well as his workshop assistants and organization) set a high bar for value. Art appears to be entirely transparent about his artistry. He is thoroughly giving, approachable, and funny. How many opportunities do you get to sit in a casual “seminar” with someone at the top of his game and “pick his brain”? Art shared with us what he was thinking as he composed his shots, where he finds inspiration and ideas, and he showed us the resulting photographs. We then went to beautiful natural surroundings to put it all together for ourselves. What an education in such a brief period of time! Art, thanks for the challenge you inspire for those of us who appreciate excellence. I can now ‘see’ how to get there.”

Thanks to all the participants for a great workshop. This workshop is offered twice each year and is always a wonderful experience for me and my great team.
The Canadian Rockies never disappoint. The scenery is the finest you’ll ever want to see, and I was so pleased to share some of my favorite locations with a small group of fellow photographers. We rode on horseback into Jasper National Park’s Tonquin Valley and rose before dawn to photograph the fleeting sunrises. The weather was mercurial: one moment the sun was glinting off the Amethyst Lakes, the next we were being stung in the face with granular snow blowing sideways. We huddled for a few minutes in a defensive circle like muskox and let the storm blow by. There was still ice on many of the lakes and we were able to experiment with abstract macro shots, which was a terrific contrast to the expansive landscape around us. Glacial powder blue Peyto Lake never disappoints and Lake Louise with its bloodred canoes is always iconic. I look forward to taking another group back soon!

As you may have heard this weekend on the XRite Coloratti Blog, I am offering a new workshop experience in August in the Canadian Rockies. This photographic workshop is sure to be one of the most unique and special of the year. This is open to a maximum of only 4 participants. I will be assisted by a veteran colleague, Gavriel Jecan, and Chris Martin, an excellent Alberta photographer that knows this territory very well. You need only show up in Calgary, Alberta ready to begin the workshop on August 14th and we take care of all the rest.

In February Becky Jones traveled with Art to Japan. Her thoughts:
It didn’t take me long to realize I was the least experienced of the group and to somewhat, panicked! But my worries were to become non-existent as Art helped me in the field and everyone else on the trip, including Gavriel, pitched in to help me learn more about Lightroom-3 and processing my photos. In the end I learned more on this trip then I have in all the other educational classes I have taken. There is something about riding along on a bus for two hours beside a new friend that is taking the time to show you, on your laptop, how to process your photos for that nights critique. I didn’t even feel bad during the critique as Art pointed out my good points and only what he thought I might do with the photos to improve them. I went home extremely happy as I knew I was now set up to do a much better job of photographing and processing my pictures. I am also signed up for the China trip and can’t wait to try out my new photographic abilities with Art and a new group of what will soon become friends. I had a total blast!!

A wonderful experience! I’ve been a fan of Travels to the Edge for years – and this was great to finally go along with Art to see where and how so many wonderful images were taken, to experience it on a truly personal basis, to learn from the absolute best about how to improve my own wildlife, cultural, and landscape photography, and to practice each day from before dawn until after dusk. And add on top of that, each evening, Art’s excellent lectures and feedback on participants’ images. BTW… the behind the scenes planning was flawless (Art has a great crew). Best part of the trip??? I got to wear Art’s famous wool cap!!! The only way to top this would be to go on multiple tours with Art and Gavriel. Thanks guys!

India’s diversity surprises you with great images. We found women beautifully dressed in bright colors, yet carrying dung on their heads for cooking and heating their homes. Ancient erotic art adorns temples. How interesting from a culture that doesn’t allow on-screen kissing in their very large and popular movie industry. Ceremonies along the Ganges, celebrate light and life with the poorest of the poor. City life and country life are expressive via the lives of the people and animals. Even a savvy street dog is found suckling from a sacred cow.
Damoiselle cranes could easily fit into the pages of my book titled Migrations. It is a never ending theme of fascination, beauty and the power of nature that arroused me once again. These beautiful graceful creatures in large numbers are an experience that I love to revisit and watch those that are witnessing this phenomenon for the first time.
