Technique Tuesday & Print of the Month: Creating the Night Fishermen

Many people believe that great photographic images are composed in a flash of inspiration; an epiphany that presents itself fully-formed, ready to be mined by the artist there to capture it. This can and does happen, yet most of the time we fumbled towards a great shot, refining the composition with each exposure.

Such is the case with one of my favorite images, featured in this video. For Technique Tuesday, hear me pull back the layers of the many elements I navigated through to get the final shot.

This shot is available as a print in our online store, and on sale this month. Also be sure to check out more videos on my multimedia page!

New Photos from Glacier Bay

What a great week in Alaska’s Glacier Bay. I’ve been coming here for four decades now, and it seems every visit provides an abundance of new opportunities to capture. The humpback whales were lively, and the bald eagles couldn’t have put on a better display for us to photograph.

If you’re interested in joining me on my next adventure, check out my workshops happening in the near future. In just over a week I’ll be off to northern Canada seeking the legendary tundra wolf, and this fall I’ll be hosting an intimate photography retreat on the Olympic Peninsula where we will photograph the Quinault Rainforest. Space is limited, so sign up before we are sold out!

I hope everyone is having a great summer so far, and enjoy the photos!

2017 2nd Quarter Images

Take a virtual journey and check out a few of my favorites taken between April 1st and June 30th! It’s been a busy but productive few months that has offered a variety of opportunities. Locations include: Central Africa (photographing those vast herds of elephants seems so long ago!), Washington’s Olympic Peninsula & San Juan Island, Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge, and California’s Point Reyes National Seashore.

Technique Tuesday – Using Extreme Light!

Harsh, direct lighting is not always the best option for shooting. However if you pick your battles, you can turn it into an advantage in creating unique imagery. Shot on location in Bolivia Art points his camera directly at the sun and uses a cactus to shield his lens, capturing effective rim lighting.

Where’s Art? Episode 3 – Point Reyes National Seashore

Episode 3 of Where’s Art is now up for your viewing pleasure! In case you missed them, you can check out all of the episodes of this segment so far on the Where’s Art section of my multimedia page. We have some exciting new ideas in store for this segment in the future!

This time around, I was on location in California visiting the Point Reyes National Seashore. I like to make this trip whenever I’m in the San Francisco area. There is such an array of wildlife – from bobcats to a variety of birds – it’s hard to come away unsatisfied. Special thanks to Daniel Dietrich for being my field guide during this trip!

New Photos from Point Reyes National Seashore

After trips to present Photography As Art in Toronto and Chicago, I spent several days last week photographing just a very few of the over 1,500 species of plants and, in particular, animals of Point Reyes National Seashore in Northern California.

This is an area that has been engaged in a back and forth battle between ranchers, developers, and environmentalists, with a fascinating history and political seesaw that resonates today. It is so important that we, and generations to come, have these wild places to retreat to. You can read about it here,  or better yet, make a trip of it and support your public lands.

“It is in the wild places, where the edge of the earth meets the corners of the sky, the human spirit is fed.”

Enjoy the photos, and keep an eye on the blog in the coming days for another edition of my new and well received audio/video segment, “Where’s Art?” from this location!

New Content Roundup!

We are always looking to bring you new content as much as possible for an on-the-go traveler and his small office staff. While it’s important to get the word out about upcoming workshops and seminars, we also know that entertaining and educational content is always welcome. To that end, we’ve added a new multimedia page with links to videos, podcasts and interviews I’ve been a part of, as well as a press kit with PDF documents for easy download for anyone looking for information on my background.

A new and exciting addition to our content offerings is the Where’s Art? segment. These roughly five minute audio/video segments are hosted by photographer Mitch Stringer, and I answer questions on location giving insight into the places I visit both on workshops and personal shoots. We’ve gotten some great feedback about this segment, so we look forward to keeping it going wherever I may be. Where’s Art? segments could be coming to you from a boat in a remote location of the coast of Greenland, or from my own back yard here on the Olympic peninsula. Either way, you’ll hear the how, why, and what I am looking for – along with images from that location.

Great news for those of you living in Hawaii, or vacationing there this November! We’ve added a date when I will be delivering my Photography As Art seminar in Honolulu. This makes for five more opportunities to catch Photography As Art in 2017:

June 18th – San Francisco
June 25th – Washington DC
November 19th – Honolulu
December 2nd – Dallas
December 3rd – Austin

Some of you have asked about the differences in this seminar and the course I recently taught that is available on CreativeLive. Of course, I recommend you enjoy both! While the online course does a great job of touching on many of the topics in Photography As Art, the full day seminar is an in-depth examination of these concepts along with a discussion and personal experience that simply watching a video cannot give you. This testimonial for Jack in Portland, Oregon does a great job of explaining what you can expect by attending the seminar.

Last but not least, the free outdoor exhibit of my Vanishing Act works, Meisterhaft Getarnt, runs through June 30th in Hamburg, Germany. I also delivered a presentation titled “All In a Life’s Work – The Creative Process of Art Wolfe” at the recent B&H Optic2017 event. You can watch it online.

Have a great weekend, and stay tuned for photos from my recent trip to Point Reyes National Seashore here in California, where I’ve spent a few days photographing before I deliver Photography As Art in San Francsico this Sunday!
