Subantarctic Atlantic Adventure

It already seems long ago, but last month I headed off to Ushuaia, the jumping off point for Antarctica and the remote islands of the southern Atlantic.

The Falklands are home to huge colonies of albatross and the rockhopper penguins.

South Georgia is my favorite place to shoot on the planet.

I guess I can’t get enough of Antarctica! I’ll be heading back there in late January-early February and there were a couple last-minute openings- more information HERE.

In spite of the weather we managed to get so much in such a short time in Iceland. The aurora borealis is always a stunner! Also, I can’t resist the adorable and affectionate Icelandic horse anytime I visit the country. In their full winter coats they were probably warmer than I was in my down jacket!

Big Changes to my “Workshop” site

Photographers at sunset, Skagit Flats, Washington

For those that peruse my site often, you are used to seeing a link to my “Workshops” site, which has always been more than just workshops. It has now been re-built, and will include information on all types of events including seminars, presentations, online only events, as well as tours organized by partners.

It is officially our “Workshops, Events and Seminars” page, but you can find it by clicking “EVENTS” in the top menu. home page layout

You can view the content on the new site in a few different ways: a list, calendar by month, or a map. content view options

We designed the site to be mobile friendly, as well as integrated with our new look. I hope you like the new Event site and look forward to seeing you at one of the events soon!

On Location: Iceland

After only a day in Seattle from Antarctica, I flew off to Iceland to photograph the Bárðarbunga Volcano. We were so lucky in our timing! The only flyable four hours in the last seven days was when we were up. It has been unflyable since. According to our guide Iurie it was his best view since it started erupting in August. The weather has been so bad with 135 mph winds that they closed the road to the Jökulsárlón ice lagoon. We are hiding out in Reykjavik. No ice caves this trip, but it’s not bad spending time in the snow with hardy little Icelandic horses.

Rice terraces, Yunnan Province, China Please call 888-973-0011 or email to license this image or purchase a limited edition print. Rice terraces, Yunnan Province, China Hill tribes have laboriously contoured the steep slopes into terraces for intensive rice production. At first glance this landscape resembles an enormous stained glass window.

Earth Is My Witness continues to garner accolades & it’s not too late to order for the holidays!

Highlights from my Winter Newsletter

Dear Friends,

I write this from aboard the Akademik Ioffe as we cruise along the Antarctic Peninsula. I am here with Denis Glennon, Shem Campion and Frans Lanting and having a terrific time. Denis offers excellent travel experiences and if you haven’t looked at his offerings lately, you should! Coming up in February is his Mystical Myanmar Tour with Gavriel Jecan and local guide Win Kyaw Zan. Change is happening in Myanmar at an unchecked pace and I recommend seeing it sooner rather than later. Also, this is a great time of year to get away to an exotic and warm part of the world.
Fishermen on Inle Lake, Myanmar
Earth Is My Witness has been garnering accolades from top publications; among many features, American Photo has named it a “Best Photo Book of the Year” and it is an Editor’s Pick in O, The Oprah Magazine, “destined for keepsake status.” It is also a featured item on Breakthrough Photography’s Kickstarter campaign. Be part of helping to launch a new company and support a young entrepreneur in his drive to create new and better ultra slim filters. I have been using them for several months now and I’m really impressed with their quality.

Lit by lanterns, fishermen along the shores of the Li River prepare their cormorants for an evening of fishing. A tradition unique to Guangxi in south central China, fishermen have always trained the cormorants to dive after and catch fish attracted to the light of the lantern.

You may have seen the short feature on Seattle’s KING5 News I did with Environmental Reporter Gary Chittim. I cannot stress how important it is to get out and reconnect with nature; it certainly keeps me grounded and much less stressed.

If you are in Seattle this month we have signed copies of Earth Is My Witness on hand, which would make any enthusiastic traveler, photographer, or art lover a thoughtful holiday gift along with tickets to the Earth is My Witness Presentation at Benaroya Hall in April. I would like to offer you a free Earth Is My Witness calendar with purchase of the Earth Is My Witness book (as long as supplies last) by using this coupon code in the store: witnesscal2015

Happy Holidays,

Art Wolfe
