Join Art Wolfe at Seattle Town Hall December 7th!

I’ll be LIVE in Seattle next week for another talk at Town hall Seattle – this time discussing my new book Night On Earth – and I’m thrilled to be joined by Ruskin Hartley of the International Dark-Sky Association. Ruskin is an expert on the subject of light pollution and the efforts to preserve the deep, dark night skies that allow us to view the heavens and the trillions stars that surround us – among many other conservation efforts!

The International Dark-Sky Association and Town Hall Seattle Present Art Wolfe with Ruskin Hartley – A glimpse of night’s mysteries, in photographs – next Tuesday, December 7th At 7:30 PM.

Town Hall Seattle – The Forum
1119 8th Ave (Entrance off Seneca St.)
Seattle, Washington 98101

Nighttime is wonderfully mysterious, beautiful, and full of a certain kind of energy — and most of the time, we diurnal humans sleep right through it. Have you ever wondered what would happen if you could not only stay awake for it all but also peek in on what’s happening at night across the entire planet?

In his newest book, Night on Earth, acclaimed photographer Art Wolfe gives us a glimpse of nature, animals, and human activity on every continent, after the sun goes down. Blazing sunsets over Antarctic ice. Night markets pulsing with activity in Morocco. Glittering star trails over the Australian outback. Colonies of penguins awaking to the dawn. Wolfe reveals it all through a dazzling compilation of photos that Sir David Attenborough calls “…a suburb evocation of some of the most breathtaking spectacles in the world.”

Wolfe takes the Great Hall stage to present slides and share stories of his travels, the process of creating the book, and the fine art of picture-making at night.

Art Wolfe is an American photographer and conservationist, best known for color images of landscapes, wildlife, and indigenous cultures. His photographs document scenes from every continent and hundreds of locations, and have been noted by environmental advocacy groups for their stunning visual impact. Wolfe has created millions of images in his lifetime and travels nearly nine months out of the year photographing for new projects, leading photographic tours and seminars, and giving inspirational presentations.

Ruskin Hartley is the CEO and Executive Director at The International Dark-Sky Association, where he champions equitable access to dark skies and quality lighting for all through IDA’s award-winning programs. Prior to his position with IDA, Ruskin directed and managed conservation programs that protect land, water, and ocean resources. He has served as executive director of Save the Redwoods League, as president and CEO of Heal the Bay in Los Angeles, and as vice president of resource development at Fair Trade USA.

Events Coming Soon to the Southeastern U.S.!

Spring is just around the corner, and after heading to the U.K. to present Earth Is My Witness at the Photography Show in Birmingham, I’ll be returning stateside for a few events in the Southeast.

Photography As Art happens on March 25th in Raleigh, North Carolina and I’ll be visiting Florida in May to present the seminar in Tampa as well. In between, I’ll be bringing a west coast favorite to Hotlanta with the inaugural Abstract Atlanta workshop, a new riff on what’s become an annual favorite that originated in Astoria, Oregon.

After being cooped up for so long, I can’t wait to get back out there refreshed and with new perspective. Hope to see you there, or at any of the other upcoming events!  For those of you interested in hanging out with me in my own back yard, check out the recent post on Pacific Northwest Events.

Space is limited, and many of these events are nearing capacity. Hop on before they sell out!

Upcoming Events in the Pacific Northwest

We are fast approaching spring and kicking off quite a few events in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Come join me for a seminar or a workshop whether you’re local or just want to visit!

March 4th: Photography As Art in Seattle

Photography As Art is coming back to Seattle, and soon! If you’ve missed out in the past, now’s your chance. This seminar tends to fill up fast as it gets near, so sign up today to ensure your spot! If you’ve attended this seminar in the past, I’m continually revising it to add new photos and perspectives, so it can be a great refresher while you prepare for spring shooting!

April 25 – 29: Olympic Peninsula Workshop with Art Wolfe

Always a fan favorite! We will include some new locations this time around, and work with 6-stop neutral density filters to expand on technique. This is an excellent way to experience the Pacific Northwest, whether you’re a native who wants to explore your own back yard, or from out of the area and want to experience the lush variety of our corner of the world where it converges between the Olympic range and the Pacific ocean

May 24-28: Abstract Astoria Photography Retreat with Art Wolfe

Situated at the mouth of the mighty Columbia River, Astoria is a fascinating and revitalizing port city with a history tied to the early territorial aspirations of the United States. My goal is work closely with each participant to truly transform and refine their skills while exploring the nature of creativity itself. This ties strongly into the subject matter I cover in Photography As Art.

August 16-19: Mt. Rainier Summer Workshop with Art Wolfe

October 11-14: Mt. Rainier Fall Workshop with Art Wolfe

Same locations, two different seasons to capture beautiful Mt. Rainier and the surrounding Cascade Range, as well as the lush forest, meadows, and surrounding forests! We will use the setting of Mt. Rainier National Park to discuss composition and design in nature photography. Aside from lessons in the field, there will also be lectures on these subjects as well as informative critiques of your work in the field.

Hope to see you all in 2018!

Pacific Northwest Events Spring Line-up

I will be busy this spring in the Pacific Northwest. Sometimes it’s a good thing to hang around the neighborhood and get reacquainted.

March 11-12, Seattle: Photography as Art Deluxe Edition

Here in my home town I am offering a special meet and greet that will take place at my house. There will be hors d’oeuvres, beverages, and a special slide show! I will also include a copy of one of my popular how-to books. The following day, we will rendezvous at the Frye Art Museum for the seminar. For those of you who attended the debut of this seminar at Kenmore Camera over a year ago, please be aware that it has been extensively updated.

April 13-16, Olympic Peninsula Workshop

Hop on this perennial favorite! I myself have decided to do just that and will co-lead this workshop with Gavriel Jecan, Yuri Choufour, and Libby Pfeiffer. We will explore this internationally recognized biosphere that is in our backyard–this is a wonderland where the scent of saltwater and fir hang in the air and the horizon sometimes seems to make the entire world appear to be shades of blue and green.

May 5-6, Seattle: Blue Earth Alliance Collaborations for a Cause (#C4C17)

C4C17 is the 5th annual visual storytelling event put on by Blue Earth Alliance. They have brought together socially conscious businesses, non-profits, educators, public agencies and content creators for two days of inspiration, exploration, and partnership building. I will be presenting the opening keynote, “All in a Life’s Work: The Creative Process of Art Wolfe” on Friday, May 5th at 9:00 AM.

May 7: Portland: Photography As Art

In this full-day seminar, you’ll learn that the beauty, emotion and versatility expressed through photography are matched only by the limits of your imagination. Using art history as a reference point, the seminar highlights common visual elements, from shape and space to texture and light, and shows you how to apply them to enhance your own compositions. You’ll explore innovative ways to translate conceptual ideas into creative results, learn how to spot the non-obvious, and uncover new ways to expand your visual imagination.

May 24-28: Abstract Astoria Photography Retreat

This is fast becoming my second most popular workshop. Situated at the mouth of the mighty Columbia River, Astoria is a fascinating and revitalizing port city with a history tied to the early territorial aspirations of the United States. My goal is work closely with each participant to truly transform and refine their skills while exploring the nature of creativity itself.
