Welcome back to Art’s Bookshelf! Last night on Tequila Time with Art, I discussed some of the books that have influenced and inspired me over the years. It’s a list of 10, but they are in no particular order. I find that as an artist, it’s difficult to choose “favorites” – any shred of inspiration you can find is simply invaluable and incomparable. Do yourself a favor and buy yourself something nice, whether it’s one of MY books, or these fantastic volumes by other authors. Looking at images online is amazing and convenient, but there is something about picking up a heavy book and immersing yourself in it’s pages with no distractions.

Last year I traveled extensively with cinematographer Abraham Joffe and the Untitled Films Works crew, filming in East Africa, Papua New Guinea, Alaska and here in Seattle. This work has come to fruition in “Tales By Light” produced by Canon Australia and National Geographic Channel.
Curious Animal is an online magazine for Adventure Travel, Photography, Music, Books, Big Issues and Ideas from around the world. Graeme Green interviewed me for a couple of pieces on Curious Animal. Apparently they had the pleasure of talking to many of the world’s best photographers, from Steve McCurry to Soren Solkaer, who spend their time traveling the world photographing everything from sharks to rock stars. I discussed disappearing cultures… Roger Ballen on the art of the strange… Chris Hadfield on photographing the Earth from space… Here are some of their thoughts on photography, the world and life itself.
For the last two years brilliant Seattle-based photographer Phil Borges has been working on a feature length documentary called CRAZYWISE. The idea grew out of his fascination with shamanism and the way indigenous cultures often look at severe mental disorders. It wasn’t until he started working on this film that he realized the depth and severity of the mental health crisis in the USA. However, this film is about hope. During the production, they have discovered underreported, innovative, community-based treatment approaches that emphasize hope for recovery, acceptance, and peer to peer mentorship. Their goal is to highlight these successful programs and have the film spark a long overdue conversation for change.

The Josephine Herrick Project is a nonprofit that enlists photographic community volunteers to educate students who have not had the opportunity to learn the communicative power of photography. Through partnerships with local organizations, JHProject’s completely free programs inspire children, teens, adults and seniors with the visual language of photography, enhancing their abilities to transform communities through artistic vision.

Johsel Namkung has long been considered a Master of Landscape Photography. His entire exhibition at the Seattle Asian Art Museum in 2006 is now part of SAM’s permanent collection. At 93 years of age, this book represents the culmination of Johsel’s life in photography.
Johsel Namkung / A Retrospective, includes 100 of Johsels best photographs, a third of which have never been exhibited. Published by Cosgrove Editions, the book comes in a standard hard cover edition plus two special editions: a Slipcase Edition of 250 signed and numbered copies, and a Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition of 100 signed and numbered copies that also includes a CD of vocal performances by Johsel, plus a 16 x 20 inch archival pigment print chosen from any photograph in the book.
The book is beautifully bound with Chinese Silk fabric, and printed with ultra high resolution technology as befits Johsel’s extremely detailed images. This oversize monograph is 13.5 inches high x 17.0 inches wide. It contains a Foreword by Art Wolfe, wildlife and nature photographer extraordinaire, a Foreword by Elizabeth Brown, former chief curator at the Henry Art Gallery, plus a portrait of Johsel by Northwest iconic photographer Mary Randlett.
Note that parking in the underground garage off of 15thAve N.E. at NE 41st Street is free on Saturday afternoon.
