World Elephant Day / Remembering Elephants Event

Today we celebrate one of the more iconic and often symbolic creatures of the animal kingdom; the elephant.

Long revered for their size (African elephants weigh as much as 22,000 pounds) and intelligence, elephants are one of the few species to use tools and employ cohesive teamwork. They are also one of the more expressive and emotional members of the animal kingdom, emoting feelings of empathy and grief for fallen companions.

On this day where we honor these amazing creatures and reaffirm our efforts to conserve and expand their numbers, it couldn’t be a better time to discuss a book project and launch event that I am honored and elated to be a part of. Remembering Elephants is a collaborative effort encompassing the work of 65 of the world’s top wildlife photographers documenting the life of an elephant. 100% of the proceeds from each book sold will benefit conservation efforts.

The book will be published in September. Field Biologist Ian Redmond and myself will be speaking at the launch event in London on September 22nd. If you’re able to make it, I would love to see you there to share our respects for these wonderful animals!

An exhibit representing the book will show from the launch to October 1st at La Galleria, Pall Mall in London.

Earth Is My Witness Exhibition News

Last week’s opening of the Earth Is My Witness exhibit at the Stadtmuseum Schleswig was a rousing success. The visit was unfortunately short because of my workshop schedule, but I was able to get a lot in. Along with the opening of the exhibit, I met with sponsors, had a meet and greet with National Geographic readers, presented a lecture, and signed the Golden Book of the City. What an honor it was and this old heart was truly warmed by the amazing reception.

The exhibit runs through October 30th.

Earth Is My Witness Exhibit Opening at Stadtmuseum Schleswig

SMSL-Anzeige Art Wolfe MM 184x265mm.indd

I am very excited to be opening the latest Earth Is My Witness Exhibit on June 2 at the Stadtmuseum Schleswig in Schleswig, Germany. I will giving a presentation on June 3rd at 8pm at the A. P. Moller-Skolen. Tickets can be purchased by emailing  stadtmuseum@schleswig.de. The exhibit runs June 3-October 30.

With his “Earth Is My Witness” project, Art Wolfe presents the highlights of his long experience in photography for the first time in a major retrospective. It is the most comprehensive presentation of his work that has ever been exhibited and it demonstrates his boundless curiosity about the world. The spectrum ranges from exotic themes in subtropical climes, such as a colorful camel market in the Indian town of Pushkar, to the most inhospitable regions on our planet including, for example, the moment at which a polar bear mother and her cubs leave the ice cave after hibernation.

Very few other photo artists can match Art Wolfe who, time and again, comes up with pictures which not only tell a gripping story, but also become icons. Perhaps it is his instinct for just the right moment, the perfect light, the creative use of state-of-the-art exposure technique, and the dialog with his subjects. Art Wolfe’s expertise is impressively demonstrated in the retrospective “Earth Is My Witness”.

The exhibition is an exclusive production by the Städtische Galerie Iserlohn and the Stadtmuseum Schleswig together with the artist. It opens on February 11, 2016 in Iserlohn where it will be open to the public until May 1, 2016. After that, the exhibition will move to the municipal museum in Schleswig and can be seen there from June 2 (opening) to October 30, 2016.

Intentional Art – Havana, Cuba

If you are into gritty abstracts like I am, you would love the ancient layers on the walls of Havana. I’ve spent 40 years photographing professionally around the world, evolving both my style and subjects. If you know me, you know how much I dislike being pigeonholed as a fur and feathers guy. Don’t get me wrong; I love photographing wildlife, but delving deep into my art history background has challenged me intellectually and helped me maintain enthusiasm and creativity for the medium. Getting in close to humanity’s coarse and granular surfaces creates photographic art on a different level.
