Over the past couple weeks many people have contacted me about what we, as a community of nature enthusiasts, can do to #Resist. Loosening of environmental regulations and the de-funding of the National Parks Service are just a couple of reasons that concerned citizens are interested in the creation of materials such as cards, info packets, and brochures to get the word out about the natural heritage we could lose.
For decades I have been working with environmental organizations and NGOs near and far in promoting awareness and raising funds to fight for our public lands. I am so heartened that our concerned citizens want to flood their congressional delegations with pro-environmental messages and visuals. While myself and like-minded individuals will never cease in exploring new ways to bring attention to these vital causes, many products and memberships already exist that will both provide donations to the organization of your choice and also serve as a signal to your representative.
And this is just a small selection of organizations you can support! Click here for a list of many of the organizations I’ve worked with over the years, all of which are worthy of your consideration for support!
However, donations only go so far – and nothing counts as much as your voice. Contacting your members of congress via phone or postal letter (far more effective than emails) and attending town hall meetings or other local events where your representatives are in attendance are the most effective ways to make your voice heard.
Contacting your elected officials is easy – Click here to locate their information.
Thank you to everyone who has reached out to me regarding this critical matter. We will continue to fight for our valuable lands and wildlife!

Earth Is My Witness is a collection of my best work, and has spawned a series of worldwide lectures, presentations, and exhibits. This quintessential award-winning book is the cornerstone for anyone looking to begin or improve upon their collection!
I just flew into London from Ivalo, Finland, and had a bit of down time to upload photos. This was my first time in Lapland and the light and snow and trees were as spectacular! Unfortunately, we were unable to photograph any auroras because of cloud cover, but we had a gorgeous final evening which made the quick three-day foray above the Arctic Circle well worth it.
Thank you, Germany! Once again, I was overwhelmed by the reception of and appreciation for my work, this time at MUNDOLogia Festival! It was a whirlwind two days in the lovely city of Freiburg. To decompress from the flight from Seattle, I wandered around town a while and did a bit of photography with my iPhone. After that, it was off to a few meetings and a reception prior to the keynote presentation of Earth Is My Witness. It was quite the event, as the photos can attest to. I am so thankful for the warm welcome each and every time I visit Germany.
A special shout out to Tobias Friedrich and Kevin Coghlin for the terrific photos of the MUNDOlogia Festival event, and organizers Tobias Hauser and David Hettich for their extraordinary hospitality. It was an extraordinary experience!
Long a favorite theme of mine is the use of a mist or fog to make a solid mass seem somewhat translucent. Using a long lens I zoomed in on these two pinnacles to make the simple shapes and lines dominant in the frame.

I’m fortunate to have been invited to speak this coming weekend at the 14th annual MUNDOlogia festival in Freiburg, Germany where I will be presenting Earth is My Witness. Two of my most memorable trips in 2016 were to present Witness in Germany, where I always receive a warm welcome. Last year when presenting in Schleswig, I was privileged enough to sign the Golden Book of the City, an unexpected and much appreciated honor.
The festival runs through the weekend, and I will be presenting on Saturday the 4th at 4 PM local time at Konzerthaus Freiburg.
We’ve actually had a winter in Washington state this year – a odd ending to what was, unfortunately, the second warmest recorded year in U.S. history. It has been good to see the mountains with a decent snow pack for a change. A couple weeks ago I took a quick run up to the Skagit Valley, a large swath of mostly farmland roughly an hour’s drive north of Seattle. I am always searching for owls and saw none this time, but we did manage to find some nice arboreal landscapes. Enjoy!
In the past few months, Wanderlust Travel Magazine did a series of articles with me. You can see them all here, including “5 Tips for Taking Great Photos of People.”
This past weekend was a full one in Texas. On Friday and Saturday I went out photographing with NANPA president Sean Fitzgerald. We found a small flock of the extremely endangered whooping cranes along the Aransas Bay, where they spend their winter. NANPA – the North American Nature Photography Association – will be holding it’s 2017 Nature Photography Summit in Jacksonville, Florida on March 2nd through the 4th.
On Sunday, I presented Photography as Art to a packed, enthusiastic house in Austin. The next Photography as Art seminar is in Atlanta, on March 5th. See you there!
Green is the theme for 2017, or so says color arbiter Pantone. The Pantone Institute of Color holds a clandestine meeting twice a year to determine a hue to represent the year, and to drive design. I can’t argue with that, having lived in the verdant Pacific Northwest all my life.
