Friday Vids – Art In Action: Abstract Astoria!

Unless you’re new to checking out the blog (Welcome, if so!) you’ve heard of my popular Abstract Astoria Workshop. It’s been a consistent destination for us year after year, and for good reason. As the oldest city on the west coast, Astoria is a venerable Scandinavian-inspired burg with an abundance of character and old-school charm. Culinary delights are around every corner, and on those corners you’re bound to find museums, breweries, and even old forts— abandoned, but ripe with photographic opportunity.

This makes it an easy choice for a recurring abstract workshop. Not only are the traditional vistas, shores, and surrounding forest great opportunities for your standard fare travel photos, the aged concrete bunkers, rusted logging equipment and waterways of moiré patterns nestled in amongst the greenery and culture make for an amazing trifecta of creativity, photography, and hospitality.

These are just some of the reasons we keep going back— and why this workshop has so many repeat clients. We’ll be heading back next spring, and now is a good time to plan your trip as this one will assuredly be a sell-out as usual! Check out the events page for this location and more.

Join Me For a 2023 Abstract Workshop!

With my new book Wild just around the corner, I’ve been heavily focused on capturing wildlife images that I’d like to include – however it’s time to get back to another passion of mine: abstract workshops! We have a few on the upcoming calendar and these are always eye-opening experiences for the folks to attend. Not only will the exercises and lessons expand your understanding of capturing an interesting provocative abstract image, the fundamentals we discuss and experience will be another tool in your kit to think about for all future photographs.

It’s my goal to ensure you come away with applicable tactics to approach all photographic opportunities with a thoughtful, unique creative eye. Even if abstract subject matter isn’t necessarily interesting to you, the creative process of capturing them is virtually guaranteed to make you a better overall photographer. . . and who knows, you might just spark a new passion!

Check out the events page for all of my upcoming workshops – we’ve just added a couple more!

Happy Twos-Day – Two Spots Left For Abstract Detroit in Two Weeks!

Two spots are available to join me in Detroit, Michigan in just a couple of weeks for the first ever Abstract Detroit workshop!

Detroit, Michigan is hard to define these days. Restoration projects abound in the urban sprawl that faced decline for many years. Nature preserves and neighborhoods have sprung up along the way, bringing green vitality to what many think of as a grey urban landscape. Modern commercial districts and the arts combine to form a growing down-town, feeling right at home amidst the array of architectural styles that define many middle-American cities.

Our home base will be the beautiful and modern Aloft Detroit at the David Witney, a modern hotel with every amenity providing the foundation for our retreat together. Over the next four days our explorations will provide opportunities to capture images unique to each participant.

I’m often asked by the curious and uninitiated to briefly explain what makes an Art Wolfe workshop unique to any other photography class you could attend. The answer is as simple as it is complicated – I simply want to change the way you see! I feel I’m uniquely qualified with a background in Fine Art and Art History to ensure you get the most growth out of your participation.

Click here for more details and to register. As the theme of today’s post states – there are just two spots left and it’s only two weeks away –  don’t hesitate to get signed up and experience the many complimentary aspects of Abstract Detroit!

Workshop Wednesday – Introducing Abstract Port Townsend!

After a scouting trip last week I have made the executive decision to switch the upcoming Abstract Astoria workshop location to beautiful Port Townsend on the northeast tip of the Olympic Peninsula. It offers just as much or more photo opportunities and I am particularly smitten with the bunkers at Fort Worden State Park, the waterfront, and the wonderful restaurants. Join me there right after the election! We’ll all need a bit of a respite!

Of course, we are keeping our workshops to safe and small groups. Only a few spots are left – sign up today!

If you’d like a little more insight into what I’m looking for when on the hunt for intriguing abstract shots, check out last night’s episode of Tequila Time, where I discuss one of the major themes I teach in this and other workshops, as well as my Pathways to Creativity streaming series – expanding your visual vocabulary! Check it out!
