Horned puffins (Fratercula corniculata)
Pribilof Islands, Alaska, USA
Fratercula means little friar. It is debatable as to whether the name was attached to the puffins because of their resemblance to a caricature of a small round man in monk’s garb or whether it originates from the bird’s habit of placing its feet sole-to-sole while in flight, as if clasping them in prayer.
