Technique: Photographing Brown Bears

I usually shoot with a 16-35mm or a 70-200mm. However, when I know I am going to be getting a chance to photograph wildlife, like Brown Bears in Katmai, I bring along something longer. Shot on location in Katmai National Park, Alaska, USA.

Keep your eyes peeled for an announcement on an exciting Katmai event coming soon!

  1. Art,

I use your DVDs in my college class … I must have watched this show five or six times before driving up to Homer and taking a flight over to Halo Bay … And when I saw that ridge, I knew I was in the right spot! Great place. I camped overnight there, and although it rained all the next day, I had the experience of a lifetime.

Still own both sets of DVDs and still watch them over and over …

Great series. Also … As I was watching the New Zealand show, I joked to my class and said that those sheep dogs look familiar … And sure enough, I had worked for a bicycle touring company back in 2005 and I photographed that same man and his dogs … I couldn’t believe it.

Anyways, I enjoy your images and thank you for all you do for artists around the world.

  2. Really enjoyed seeing the Bears in ‘situ’ against the fabulous backdrop of the mountains. Thanks for the shooting tips and as always for sharing such wonderful images.

Thanks for sharing your photography tips Art.

I’m still waiting for the day to hear from you as I will never ever forget the experience of travelling with you in Gujarat and Kerala and I must say I learned many finer techniques of photography during that trip. Hope to have another opportunity of travelling with you and your clients in near future.
